Management of Gestational Diabetes
Gestational Diabetes is condition during pregnancy in which glucose level in blood is considerably high. Gestational Diabetes is temporary, after birth of child it disappears. However if untreated or poorly managed it will cause many health problems such as type 2 diabetes to mother as well as baby.
Best way to manage Gestational Diabetes is through proper diet and regular exercise during pregnancy which keeps glucose level in permissible limit. However there are some factors which put women high risk at Gestational Diabetes. Family history of diabetes, age of mother (if more than 30), obesity, having gestational diabetes during previous pregnancy, given birth to a baby more than 8 pound previously are some factors in which gestational diabetes is expected.
It is important to diagnosis and treats gestational diabetes in its primary stages. Screening glucose test is conducted during 24 to 28 week of pregnancy for the diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes. Depending on the results other test such as glucose tolerance test and 3 hour glucose tolerance test are carried out.
If a woman has Gestational Diabetes, treatment should be started immediately. Proper balanced diet and regular exercise during pregnancy are helpful in controlling gestational diabetes. Insulin therapy is needed when blood glucose level exceeds and not controlled by diet and exercise. You should monitor your glucose level regularly. It is a comment practice to check blood glucose level four times daily.
About 3 to7 percent women have Gestational Diabetes. However if it diagnosed and treated on time, it will not cause any health problem to mother and her baby.
