Gestational Diabetes Risks
Some women without prior diabetes get diabetic during pregnancy. This is called Gestational Diabetes which is condition of high glucose level in blood. Any woman expecting a baby can get Gestational Diabetes. However some women are at high risk of Gestational diabetes. Following are some factors which put them at more risks of Gestational Diabetes.
- Mother with age more than 30
- Mother with obesity (Excess body weight)
- History of family about diabetes
- If given birth to a baby with gestational diabetes previously
- If given birth to oversized baby (more than 8 pound) previously
- Member of ethnic group i.e. Hispanic, African, American, South East Asian, Native American, Indigenous Australian or Pacific Islander
If Gestational Diabetes remains undiagnosed or untreated may create problems for new born baby as well as mother. Mother with Gestational Diabetes give birth to oversized or overweight baby, this may need caesarean section at delivery. Birth time injury (stillbirth) may also occur.
Sometime glucose level in blood of new born baby may be low if glucose level in blood of mother is high during delivery tome. After breastfeeding glucose level comes to normal. New born baby may also have breathing problem as his lungs are not totally developed. Blood pressure of mother remains high during delivery.
