Gestational Diabetes Ketones
Gestational Diabetes is temporary diabetic condition in pregnant woman. In gestational diabetes, glucose level in blood increases. Insulin hormone is inhibited to convert glucose into energy by hormones produced during pregnancy.
In our body, glucose is main source of energy. Woman with gestational diabetes can not use glucose in blood as energy fuel because of insulin resistance. In this situation, our body burns its own fats for energy. In this process a by-product is formed. This bi-product is a type of acid called Ketones. Ketones pass from bloodstream to urine.
Ketones are formed in your body due to following reasons.
- Not eating balanced diet (less carbohydrates)
- Skipping snack or meal
- More exercise than usual
- Morning sickness
- Vomiting
You should check urine for ketones daily. If ketones in urine are in the range of moderate to high then consult your health care provider. Increased ketones in your blood are dangerous for fetus which causes problems such as low IQ value and learning problem in future.
To avoid this, you should take balanced diet daily which include 3 time snacks and 3 meals during a day. Also take bed time snacks which should be rich in proteins. Do not skip any meal or snack.
