Gestational Diabetes Effects
Gestational Diabetes is temporary diabetes in pregnant woman due to high glucose level in blood. Gestational Diabetes disappears after birth of baby and also don't have immediate health problem. If it left untreated or managed poorly, then it can put mother as well as baby at risk.
Women with gestational diabetes may have it during next pregnancy and can also get type-2 diabetes in future. It may also cause premature labor, having too much amniotic fluid and high blood pressure.
In woman with Gestational Diabetes, baby can grow larger which make delivery difficult. Sometime C section or cesarean section is needed.
Glucose level of baby is remained low after birth. Baby makes extra insulin in response to high glucose level of mother. Just after birth, baby may continue to produce insulin which lowers glucose levelin blood. However it will come to normal after breast feeding. Sometime sugar water solution or glucose is required.
If you have Gestational Diabetes, your baby sometime is born with risk of jaundice, heart defect and respiratory distress syndrome. There is also chance of stillbirth or obese child.
You can manage Gestational Diabetes with help of your doctor. If you do so then you minimize most of the risks associated with it. Balanced diet, regular exercise and insulin injections (if needed) are helpful in managing Gestational Diabetes.
